Hair Loss Treatment
Platelet-Rich Plasma for Hair Loss
Hair loss is a commonly occurring condition affecting about 50 million American men and women. However, a revolutionary new treatment, regenerative cellular therapy, is providing a solution by regrowing lost hair. Vitality Medical Center offers our patients this safe, effective treatment as a way to restore your youthful appearance and vibrance.
Platelet-rich plasma therapy, more commonly referred to as PRP therapy, has been shown to offer many benefits. For example, an increase in hair count, hair density and the growth phase of the hair cycle, reports the National Institutes of Health.
What is PRP?
Blood consists of two main ingredients, red blood cells and plasma. Plasma has white blood cells and platelets which consist of growth factors and proteins that accelerate tissue repair. Likewise, growth factors can stimulate hair follicles to foster new hair growth.
Some types of hair loss are an outcome of damaged hair follicles. But, studies have shown that PRP can regrow hair by reversing the triggers from androgenetic alopecia.
What to Expect During and After PRP Therapy
The efficacy of PRP for hair growth relies on the use of your platelets. The scalp treatment area will receive a topical numbing cream before the platelets are retrieved. Meanwhile, as the area is numbing, treatment will begin with a simple blood draw from your arm. After that, a centrifuge machine will process the blood. This machine uses centrifugal forces while spinning the blood to separate the red blood cells from the plasma.
The treatment area is cleansed and the numbing cream is removed before the PRP injections are administered. Then, the micro-needling portion of treatment occurs. Micro-needling involves making small tiny channels to stimulate a repair response. Also, these tiny channels create a passage for any leftover PRP. Then, the platelet-rich plasma is injected into the numbed scalp in various locations near the hair follicles in a grid-like pattern. The delicate application of PRP injections to locations across the scalp is a precise process. However, the treatment takes less than half an hour.
Hair is cleansed and treatment is done after the PRP injections. After that, patients are free to drive home. Patients require no assistance following treatment since it doesn’t necessitate sedation or medication. Likewise, post-treatment restrictions are minimal and are limited to at-home care.
Is PRP Safe?
If talk of blood draws and injections are making you nervous, rest assured, there are no real risks involved with PRP. In other words, the procedure is safe, non-invasive and has minimal downtime–if any.
Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital talked to Allure magazine about PRP. He said, “Most patients get injections without any numbing, as there is minimal discomfort. However, minimize pain with cool air or ice packs. In the event there is any discomfort, Tylenol after the procedure is also recommended. Bruising can occur. But, it usually resolves within a week or two.” Furthermore, boost blood flow and circulation with the hot temperatures of a warm shower, Zeichner says.
Are You a Candidate?
PRP therapy for hair regrowth is available for anyone who is experiencing hair thinning or hair loss that is looking for a non-surgical solution. Our Vitality Medical Center staff can determine what your treatment plan would look like for optimum results. Certainly, the best results will come from consistency.
During PRP therapy, treatment will continue once a month for the first three to four months. After that, they will occur every three to six months to support on-going growth factors. But, individual results and timelines vary according to each treatment plan and goals. Patients can expect to see results within two to three months.
Above all, PRP hair treatment offers our patients suffering from hair thinning or hair loss a medically and scientifically sound option for hair restoration.
Amniotic Allograft + PRP Hair Restoration Procedure
Vitality uses amniotic allograft growth factors and PRP treatments to help restore hair in a multi-method approach. This restoration procedure expertly treats:
- Women’s Alopecia
- Male pattern baldness
- Receding hairline
- Hair thinning
As part of our combination approach, patients receive three treatments of PRP at six week intervals. The first of these treatments will be with both PRP and amniotic allograft.
The Power of Amniotic Allograft for Hair Restoration
Amniotic allograft is a human-derived Extracellular Matrix (ECM) harvested from prescreened, full term, Cesarean section donors. It is processed and cryopreserved to exacting ATB (American Tissue Bank) and FDA standards.
Amniotic allograft is incorporated in hundreds of thousands of procedures in orthopedics, ophthalmology and oral maxillofacial surgery. The powerful proteins involved stimulate stem cells, lessen inflammation and trigger the growth phase.
Low Level Laser Therapy Cap Stimulates Hair Cell Growth
Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is an integral part of hair regrowth treatment. LLLT accelerates blood flow, boosts synthesis of protein, DHA, fibrocyte, and ATP. Laser light enters the scalp at a depth of 3-5mm and is able to stimulate the base of the hair follicle. By healing the base of hair follicles, laser technology activates the mitochondria of hair cells.
After that, mitochondria produce cell energy, (ATP), employed by hair follicles for regrowth . Low Level Light Therapy works over time by addressing all phases of hair growth.
Keep Hair Looking Its Best with Maintenance Therapies
PRP therapy for hair regrowth is an effective method to restore hair fullness. But, it isn’t a curative treatment. We recommend maintenance therapies quarterly or bi-annually to keep your hair looking its best. Similarly, genetics will determine each patient’s injection schedule. Also, hair pattern, the amount of hair loss, age and hormones play a part.
Do Other Medical Therapies Work With PRP?
Many patients choose to combine PRP therapy with other medical therapies for hair regrowth. It is safe to continue using FDA approved products like finasteride and minoxidil to help you obtain/maintain your desired results.
PRP treatments can boost hair restoration through the growth factors in platelets. Subsequently, platelets trigger cell proliferation and speed healing. Also, they stimulate tissue regeneration in the treated area, reports Johns Hopkins Medicine.
